Flanagan has lived the American Dream. Happily married.
A successful businessman. A former State Representative.
Educated in Manatee
Public Schools, Mark attended the University
of Florida, and graduated from the University
of San Francisco with a degree in history. Mark
returned to Manatee County, where he married his high
school sweetheart, Donna. They have three children,
Brendan, Meghan, and Kevin. Brendan, the oldest recently
graduated from high school and will be starting Florida
State University in the fall.
Mark is a successful small business
man working in financial planning. Mark was motivated
to enter politics by his political idol, Ronald
Reagan. Like millions of Americans, Mark was inspired
by Reagan's sunny optimism and promise of less government
and a strong national defense.
1994, Mark decided to run for the Florida
House of Representatives. Running against, a well-financed
and well-known incumbent, Mark stunned the political
world in a major upset. In the State House of Representatives,
Mark was a strong conservative voice. A consistent friend
of small business, he was an early advocate of tort
reform when much of the Florida Legislature was still
dominated by the Personal injury lawyers. Mark was a consistent
opponent of tax increases and opposed all efforts to
increase the tax burdens on Floridians. For these efforts,
Chamber of Commerce awarded him their 100% Pro Business
Roll Call Award and he was named by the National Federation
of Independent Businesses as a Guardian of Small Business.
He was a strong leader in the fight
for the unborn. Mark has been consistent in his opposition
to abortion and no one has ever questioned his stand
on the issue.
by his peers in the State House, as a leader, where
he served as Chairman of the House Banking Committee
and Chairman of the House Select Committee on Oversight
and Accountability on Florida's Pension Funds. Additionally,
he served as the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Manatee
County Legislative Delegation. He was a key lieutenant
of Governor Jeb Bush's in the Legislature.
In Manatee County, Mark is a community
leader. Having served on the Boys and Girls Club Executive
Board, Mark has shown a dedication for the youth in
the community. He also has been a Little League Manager
for the Manatee County West Little League and is a member
of the Knights of Columbus and is active in his parish
Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Still active
in the Republican Party, Mark recently served as Chairman
of the Manatee
County Republican Party.
